Player Setup Part 1: Create Character and Decide Characteristics

When first creating your trainer, you will want to take some time before and brainstrom what type of trainer you want to be. Think of a backstory and make sure to communicate with your other players. A well weaved backstory can give the DM a lot of help and really prove to benefit you campaign later on. Bringing in pieces from your backstory are what make the game a lot more deep and enjoyable. I'd also recommend having a pre-built connection with the other trainers. That is something that has worked a lot better for the groups I have played with, that way you aren't all just trying to screw eachother over. Although, sometimes that's exactly what you want to do. It's up to your decision.

You will also want to figure out what is your main motivation as a character. Do you want to become the best trainer out there? Maybe you want to become a pokemon Professor or a Gym leader. Maybe you just want to find all of the legendary pokemon or become the best pokemon chef there ever was. The world of Pokemon has so many possibilities. Its for you to decide what you want to do with your trainer. Having a motivation will give you a direction when playing your character. You'll want to follow this motivation and act as your character would in certain situations that present themselves.

Now that you've figured out a little more about your character. What's your name? Are you a boy or a girl? The typical questions any good Pokemon Professor would ask you. You will want to make sure you get your campaign code from your DM. This is an important part because this is how we link you character to your campaign you are wanting to play.

In the Pokemon games your Pokemon each have a nature that define them. These natures are very important in deciding how they develop. Well, in the Pokemon RPG the Pokemon still have natures and these natures will give you different boosts throughout the game to your character. Not only do the Pokemon have natures in this game, but so do you. This will help tell how good you naturally get along with your pokemon. Your starting pokemon will always have the same nature as you do. This is to provide that you always have a special bond with the first pokemon you get.

With the basics complete let's really start to build your character. There are 5 Characteristics that you can build into your trainer. These characteristics you won't be able to change later. These characteristics have certain attributes that depend on them. So the higher your Dexterity is, the easier it will be to pass an athletics check. So make sure that you create your character now how you will want them throughout the whole game. These are the 5 characteristics and what they do.

Characteristics

  • Dexterity: This is your physical attribute. If you are wanting to be agile, strong or sneaky then you will need this attribute. The ability to steal or jump from ledge to ledge will depend on this ability.
  • Willpower: Willpower is your inner strength. This is just the person that you are and something that gets you through the hard times. It is what born leaders have. So if you plan on being a leader or a medic then you will need this characteristic.
  • Intelligence: This one is pretty self explanatory. How smart do you want to be? This doesn't have to be just about random things, but battle tactics, hacking computers or even just finding your way around your region.
  • Wisdom: People who have high wisdom are those who have great experience. Rather in the wild surviving or knowing what is going on currently. The wise handle themselves well in high pressure situations.
  • Charisma: The talkers. Lie, persuade, or negotiate. Hold the power of words with your silver tongue.

You have 14 points to put into these characteristics. You can put a max of 5 points into one characteristic and can put 0 if you want in a characteristic also. Make sure to look over the abilities in the next section to see what you will be using most and base your characteristics off what you will need. The points in each characteristic and ability will decide how many and what dice you roll for checks.

In my example I decided that I would make my character have high willpower and Intelligence. I want blue to be a strong willed character who can survive out in the wild and be a great person in battle for his healing that he knows.

Player Setup Part 2: Choose abilities

Being able to really do anything effective in this game requieres you to do a check. The check will be a roll between the player doing the check and the DM making a difficulty roll. There are many different types of checks and situations to do them. The amount of dice the trainer rolls depends on the abilities that he/she has in the given ability that is being challenged. If I try to convince someone to let me in to the Beauty Pageant even though I have really ugly Pokemon, then I would have to roll a persuasion check and see if I am successful. The more points I have in the ability and corresponding characteristic, the easier it will be.

There are a lot of abilities that you can use throughout the game. Here is a page all about the abilities that you can use and how they can help you in your game.

Abilities

Player Setup Part 3: Choose Types

Now that you as a trainer have set up your capabilites as a person. You will now need to find your inner inspiration that will guide you in your journey to become what you desire in the pokemon world. As a trainer you will be better with certain types of pokemon than others. You can choose to become a hiker with high rock for your future onix or maybe load up on bug type to become the best bug catcher out there. Most will spread their wealth around and try to become a well rounded trainer.

When deciding your types remember that rolls are based off of the type of the move, not the pokemon. Just because you have a Charmander and you have 3 fire doesn't mean you will roll at least 3 dice every time. If you use a normal type move and your normal is only a 1 then you will just roll one dice. The type the pokemon is will increase the chance that the pokemon will use that type of move, but doesn't mean that's all it will learn.

These are the amounts that you will be given to choose your starting types.

  • Choose one to be your main starting type. You will recieve 3 points in this type. I would encourage basing your main type off of the starter that you will want.
  • Choose 5 secondary types. These types will be pokemon you hope to train and tame in the future on your journey. These 5 secondary types will get 2 points each.
  • Put one point in all of the rest. Yes, every trainer starts out with at least 1 point in every type. This helps you to at least be able to do something with moves that you get.

If you are totally new to pokemon then here is a link to Bulbapedia which can teach you more about types and type effectiveness. There are some great tools in baseofop that will make this very easy for you to work with, but you will need a knowledge of this too. That way when you get hit by a x4 attack it makes more sense of why massive damage.

After you have completed these steps and spent all of your alloted amount then click submit and we will checkout your pokemon! (If you are a DM reading this, please go back to the dm section and continue.)

Player Setup Part 4: Choose Your Career

One of the most defining features of your character is the Career that you choose. Are you an Ace Trainer, Breeder or Super Nerd? Take a look at all of the careers and the abilities that come with each. The abilities each cost and are in a pyramid. So you have to buy the first line item in order to buy the one below it. So forth and so on.

The abilities can be skill boosts or hinderance for you DM. They can also be usable to during the session or the battle to give you an advantage.
